The Scarlet Cost is: David Johnson and Michael Van London. Both have extensive careers of their own before forming this duo. Michael Van London has honed his skills “on both sides of the ocean and in between them” for years in Los Angeles where he has fronted his bands The Bombs and The Black Beverly Heels while constantly recording and releasing material under his own name. Van London has made his home in the Seattle area. His music has been featured on MTV, made officially available in Rock Band, and been spotlighted in Spotify’s “Artist of the Week”.
David Johnson got his performing start at the open mic at Café Zippy in Everett, Washington. Shortly after, he recorded his debut album in 2012 and played his first show at The Skylark in West Seattle. He continued to book shows thereafter. Before joining The Scarlet Coast, David has released four albums. He has played a large list of venues throughout Washington and Oregon. His music ranges from cutting and visceral to uplifting and upbeat with lyrics that are original and personal yet accessible to the listener.
The Scarlet Coast’s debut record Sittin’ On Top Of The Pines is an infectious blend of pop, rock and folk. Covering themes of love, loss, longing and joviality, the album brings the listener on an exciting and unique journey through their lives. Rich with three and four part harmonies, vocals were a big focus of the production. Scot Michael of Titan Recording Studio in Seattle played much of the accompaniment. “Everybody” touches on how love is a universal experience, whether it be for straight folks or the LGBTQIA+ community – that likeness is what can bring us together as people and create mutual understanding. “Gene” deals with the loss of Michael’s dog Apollo who developed terminal cancer at just four years old. These songs address topics of the human experience that make the material relatable.
The debut album is slated for release in late summer of 2021, with music videos to accompany it. Currently with covid, shows may be few and far between – but as things improve in the coming year(s) the band will tour and promote the album more and more. Johnson and Van London are a powerhouse of lyrical creativity and melodic prowess and will continue their perspective careers in addition to the duo.
